 araf
one my favorite places.... it is in balo sk. off the nevizade street through tarlabasi, keep on, u will see the sign of it on ur right... take the lift to the top floor... in turkish means purgatory, exactly defines the place
a 30 cl beer is 4 ytl, so quite cheap.. no entrance fee even at weekends... on sunday they got a new band named balkan brass.. i experienced them last sunday, was charmin... a gypsy band, lets say, in "world music" concept... on tuesdays selim sesler playin, a famous traditional clarinetist.. havent listened him alive though... and on wendesdays a band called luxus... can be said that rock&funk interpretatiton of traditional patterns....
a very warm, right place to socialize and have fun...

We had one of our first EiT meet ups there.........introduced members to the regular nightlife nuances of Istanbul - smoke, noise and dancing! Since moved to quieter venues!
Araf used to be great but think it's gone downhill a little bit. Can normally find quite a few foreigners in there though, brought by the student crowds. Seen Selim in there with his little band of merry men many a time.
If I go on a Tuesday I'll give you a shout Rev (check out The Lounge thread on Selim for a nice article).

Yeah trying to think of a free place like Araf with live music and dancefloor that isn't rock/alternative based..................can't!
I used to go to Eski Beirut last year because they played Arabic stuff...bad toilet though! Turka stylie!

i gave up eski beyrut... i havent been there for 2 years maybe, i used to go there often, but suddenly it converted to a some sort of, version of a eclectic turku bar... but dont know the current occasion though..
i do love to listen rock music but not going to rock bars to cheer up with cover music ... boring stuff i believe.. unfortunately there r dozens of them..
maybe u can try peyote sometime in nevizade area, sure if u havent yet..
we should not skip badehane as well...

For rock bars ive always liked RH Positive, its a nice grungy little place, ok bands and a fairly eclectic music choice, amazing mural along the wall aswell of people dancing. Small dark place.
