 Dukkan
I've been pondering whether to post this or not but have decided that it is only fair that I do.
The best steak restaurant in Istanbul is Dukkan.
The quality of the meat is fantastic, they will actually serve it rare if you ask them to, they have wonderful burgers, and they serve you free sausages as a starter. You eat from wooden chopping boards (the only way to approach a steak), and have accompaniements of mustards, smashed potatoes with sea salt, and simple salad leaves.
The venue is fascinating: perched in Kucukarmutlu looking down on gece kondos and looking up at Maskhattan. There is lots of light, an open kitchen and giant wooden tables to eat from.
In a city deprived of a good steak restaurant, this is a real find. It has an empasis on quality in everything that it does and as such deserves to be a massive success.
5 stars: enjoy (and thank you to Keith for the recommendation).

Sounds fabulous.

Just had to find out where that district was - Küçükarmutlu - next to the second bridge (Armutlu not Rumeli Hisari) on the European side.
Was also told about the danger of the area, how it harbours criminals, is leftist and how in the 90s there was a local hunger strike in order to get prisoners released. Fascinating

On the bullet proofed taxi ride back I saw a man on the side of the road with a teatherd goat, who looked suspiciously like EiT's Starman, so you are probably right about the reference to the 90's, leftist and criminal.

We've been meaning to go and I'm glad to hear the rave reviews.
Was just wondering about price and if they serve wine?
