 His Dark Materials
Has anyone read Philip Pullmans "His Dark Materials" trilogy? Is it any good?
I have a feeling I might like it.

Yes it's great although I found the third one less so. Didn't manage to get to see the film as I was in between moving countries. But will wait for the DVD. Did anyone who has read the books see it and what did they think?

Coco yeah saw the film but unfortunately it does not live up the the book. There were good visual effects but it should have been longer (can't believe I am saying this) and darker (like the materials).
I do hope that they continue with the trilogy (just for the sense of completeness) but apparently the film bombed on its first weekend in the US so the sequels may be pull(man)ed.
Why didn't you like the third book by the way?

I agree with Coco, the third booked sucked and so did most of the second one. I found the creatures on wheels in the last book completely stoopid and that's when I lost interest.

I loved the creatures on wheels. The whole idea of parallel evolution was excellent.

I just simply didn't find the third book as engaging or exciting. More predicatble and less dark i suppose. Lyra's charecter was far more exciting when she was a bit wild. And her mother was far more exciting when she was evil.

have to agree - the third book whislt good by normal standards; wasn't up to the level of the other 2.....the first book being the best. havent' seen the film; but it's by accounts going to be the only one.
regardless of the quality of hte film; it bombed in part becuase of the "anti-religious" bent and the previous comments of Pullman against organised religions. That in turn led to a rare unity across the board amongst US based religions; from Christain, to Jewish to Muslim and beyond - and then campaings against screenings; which in turn led to fear by US based cinema chains and a limited release......
Mary Poppins is this years big christmas release i believe.....mind you, she can fly using an umbrella; that might lead to accusations of witchcraft.....think again....

Not a direct sequel to the trilogy.
The films might not be as dead in the water as they were originally thought to be. It's too complicated and ironic a story to get into right now. But I bet Bob Shaye is pissed off that the film cost him his job, nay, his company, might end up with sequels after all...
No idea what jonowales is on about re Mary Poppins's being a Christmas release this year.
Have you noticed the way Pullman mucks up his own timeline in the books, not to mention the descriptions of the scenery, especially of Citagazze? Where is the breakwater with relation to the lighthouse or the beach for example? Its position changes in each paragraph.

The Guardian on Saturday had an extract of the new book. I haven't read it as I want to wait for the book.
