 Marmaris Tourist Safari
Now - I'm no Prince Charles but I was genuinely shocked at the type of tourists Marmaris seems to attract!
Driving through the town at the weekend, all I seemed to spot were overweight, badly dressed, sun burnt, fag chuffing tourists. Whether they were British, Danish, German.....who knows! Obviously I can't be sure but I felt like I was in some kind of safari park!
''Look at that one!'' ''What does she look like?''
Somehow in my life I missed out on the package holiday tour stuff (a blessing?) and although I lived in a tourist resort for a while, even that was nothing like the Marmaris phenomenon of the part I saw. Maymunn and I met up with Ladyofleisure and her husband who live in a village near Marmaris. They informed us that the local council are shutting down bars, getting tougher on business owners, etc in the attempt to rebrand Marmaris as a mid-range to upper- holiday destination...and it seems to be working! The place was dead they said.
Luckily the place we were staying was great - highly recommend it but only if you are with a lover and want to severely chill - otherwise you'll be bored by the lack of any action! http://www.marti.com.tr

The man's got balls! I liked the observation by Monkey that although I am outgoing, I'm not up for karaoke! Strange that! LadyofL too - we were hiding!

Marmaris two summers ago was far far from the Marmaris I knew from the early 90's. I only stayed there for a few days before I headed to Bodrum to meet friends. When they went home, I went to Istanbul instead of back to my charter hotel in Marmaris even if I knew where to go to the beach where there were less foreign tourist and more of local tourists.
Icmeler is very nicely buildt up, but tooooo touristy for me.

Marmaris: fantastic natural harbour, bucket and spaders. What can you do?
Last September we spent our little time in Marmaris lounging by the pool in the Marina. The few times we ventured into town we came back pretty shellshocked. Em's parents got a cheap charter flight to/from Dalaman and said it was just about the worst flight they'd ever taken. This year they're flying scheduled flights via Istanbul despite the extra cost. As soon as we hit the boat we're leaving port!

Worst flight I ever had was manchester-Dalaman with some outfit called JMC. Again full of the bucket & spade brigade and the flight was like getting on a dolmus between Armutlu and Gultepe. Bastard attendants wouldnt let me open the window for fresh air!!

I always try to avoid places where you see the prices in English, if it has any bars called the 'Red Lion ' or 'Pig and Whistle' or where the buyruners constantly say 'Marks and Spencers price luvvly Jubbly'... i.e Marmaris , Didim, Icmeler etc
Does this mean that I am a snob??

I think any mediterranean resort that the British tourist invades en masse should be blown off the bloody map, you only have to visit Blackpool in England to see what they allow happen to their home seaside towns.

If it wasn't for all the British tourists down there I wouldn't be able to get bacon and eggs for breakfast at fairly decent prices whenever I go on holiday.

if marmaris gets blown off the map then my little turkish village will go also! I can understand how you feel about the tourism, and I quite agree. But is it not the turks that have created this? Their idea of what people want have spawned the "Blackpool" image.
To blanket bomb all areas tourist would surely include Istanbul, Methinks you all need a dose of goat village to regain your perspectives!
Ch....... all Datca'ites are snobs!!!!!

Blackpool certainly appeals to people who I cannot relate too,
Its the same in Spain too, bloody english tourists hanging Union Jacks off the balconies,
I agree Marmaris is a lovely resort and has been spoilt by tourism, what can be done
