Post What to do and see in Bodrum Town ??
On a day trip across the water to Bodrum tomorrow with my mother in tow. Can someone give me some ideas as to where is good to see/ go / eat around the town - bearing in mind we will be on foot.

Thanks in anticipation of some useful replies.

Clive

I lived there for 3 years but that was back in the mid 90's and has grown ten fold since then.
Avoid Gumbet at all costs. If you want a beach then get the water taxi to Bardakci. Not much to see in the castle now that we moved most of the underwater museum to Germany but maybe worth a wee look and they had some great tea gardens inside.
Ora bar and the hadigare where the in places and they are still there as of last summer.
As for some where to eat, I used to always go to the place on the corner just down from the ora bar but cant for the life of me remember the place or the owners name. There was a good little mexican place on the small road going to the musalium but not sure if that is still there but they did great frozen margaritas and fajitas.

Mado (ice cream) place off the main shopping street is good for refreshments. It has good views of the castle in the back which is an open terrace. I think there I a nice bar by the marina called Cuba.

Mado place is called Bodrum cafe. This is the place where all the nisantasites hang out and is the place to be seen in.
There is also a good kokeric wheel by the bus station you might want to check out.

Is that right Starman? We went there for ice cream one night last summer with my Turkish friends/hosts.

Thanks for the tips, although didnt use too many of them. I'm not really impressed with Bodrum. The harbour is absolutely crammed with boats - so you don't get any good views over the water and I think they all flush their toilets into it ; wouldn't want to swim there . Too many restaurants all selling the same crap 'English' breakfasts and prices in euros not lira. The Mausoleum was rubbish , a hole in the ground with loads of old stones lying about (although it will look good when it's finished).

Also it's a lot more humid than here, ok for a day trip but I'll stick to my own peninsula

I am not a fan of Bodrum town either. I was only there twice last summer, for shopping/dinner and for a Pink Martini concert. It's fine for an afternoon into the early evening but I prefer Turkbuku especially for the nightlife. I like Yalikavak too. I stayed there for a few days in summer 2004. It's much more laid back and relaxing.

I would recommend Gümüşluk about half an hour from Bodrum, its a nice little cove and has nice restaraunts right on the beach, one had tables and chairs on the sand with enourmous candle sticks in the water, nice place for a relaxing time away from crowds and noise.

Yes, Gumusluk is nice. Hardly grown since 1990 when I first was there.
AlSF, remember to have bikini/swimwear on if you like to go over to Tavsan ada (rabbit island). You might manage to get over there without getting sea water all the way up to your bikini, but it is easy to 'slip'(?) and fell into the water when walking over some old ruins.
So yummy fish there!
