 Çalış Beach
Can't agree more Lorraine. It was good to see an organised clear up over there, but unless this is carried out on a regular basis I reckon things will just end up the same as ever.
FethiyeTimes.com listed the businesses who either took part in or sponsored the clean up and it was interesting to note that there was no direct involvement by any of the local estate agents (anyone know different?).

Yeah, sad to say my last visit to calis in August 04 was like walking through an ashtray. We filled two 1.5 liter water bottles with all the butts we collected in our immediate vicinity. The belediye did a nice job with Calis' paving stones, trees, even the caretta cages (for breeding sea terrapins), but the beach itself needs a lot of help. One addition I did enjoy, though, was the brown burlap tent at the end of the beach where they play turkuler, folk music, and dance. we had some good nights there last time.

I dont know if any estate agents helped in the beach clean up but then again I didnt do them when I lived in England near the beaches there i paid my council taxes and the council did the job, which should happen here. if you have seen the papers here it was an estate agent that payed the most tax in Altinkum this year so perhaps you should be looking at the Belediye/govt to sort this out not targetting estate agents

Bryn, was more a reference to another forum, sponsored and moderated by a Calis estate agent, where they had a 14 page thread about how manky Calis beach is.

This is from the fethiye times and lists all the sponers and organisers.
Calis beach clean up a great success posted 19/04/2005
It started with the traditional sound of drum and zurna just to let everyone in Calis know that the beach clean up was happening. Around 60 people donned rubber gloves and filled bin bags in a line that moved slowly along the whole length of the beach. Very satisfying to look back and see the difference. The whole exercise took a couple of hours and ended with a Belediye truck hauling away the filled bags, and the Orient Express Restaurant providing free pide and ayran for everyone who took part. The following organisations took part directly or sponsored the activity:
Fethiye Council
Directorate of Tourism Information
FETAV
Association to Improve Calis
Orient Express Restaurant
Seril Hotel
Simsek Hotel
Istanbul Apartments
Almina Apartments
Bahar Hotel
Auga Park
Serkul II Restaurant
Nil Pension
Aydin Pide Restaurant
European Diving Centre.
So a big thank you to all of the above and everyone who made the effort to attend and fill a bag. It was lovely to see so many of the Calis hotel and restaurant community getting involved. However, unless the waste bins along the promenade are put in place, the beach will soon be dirty again.

 calis beach
Looks a bit better than it did. It had been a tip for so long that I gave up looking at it! Its hardly the most appealing beach in the world and they are apparently charging seven YTL for sunbed hire this year. Bloody cheek!! Just as well the Turks dont hire them!

i was there last month and didn't see much trash--but i was told it was because the tourists had not yet arrived.
are they ever planning to get rid of those huge rocks/slabs of concrete right under the waves on most of the beach?

I stayed in a hotel in front of the beach in Oludeniz in July 2004. My ex-bf and I were the only non-Brits in the entire hotel guest roster. In fact when I inquired about staying at the hotel, I was told I could only book a room via a local travel agency since the hotel only deals with tour operators. Out of all the hotels in Oludeniz, that was the only property I liked, Belkis Beach Hotel. But the baech itself, Oludeniz was a huge disappointment. It's a pebble beach, not a sandy beach. The lounge chairs cost about 8YTL at the time I think but they were really uncomfortable. We got two but it was a task choosing two that weren't broken nor missing a piece. The area itself is so touristy and the only Turkish people I met were the staff at the hotel and the bars/restaurants. The food at the hotel was of good quality. I especially liked dinner one evening where the featured cuisine was from Thailand and of course, Turkish kebab. The pool was fine but there were no pool towels available for guests. BYO was the thing to do. Another critique is the lack of proper equipment in the very small and un-airconditioned gym.
