 Tourist Resort Ghettos
Now this might cause some controversy but what the hell. Might be useful for expats to know of places where NOT to vacation in Turkey and to avoid like the plague.
My top 5.
Hisaronu, Mugla, a british colony with fish and chips, pork butchers and Hackney style appartment blokes with residents to match.
Calis, Mugla. Used to be a quiet village when I lived there populated by a billion frogs. Now all new appartments and villas built on a bog which floods every winter.
Kusadasi, Aydin. Billions of tourists jumping off for the day from the passing cruise ships and also under heavy construction.
Gumbet, Mugla. Next to Bodrum but has turned into another British outpost populated by the mainly club 18-30 rif raf.
Cant think of a fifth one at the moment that comes to mind but I am sure someone else has another place.

What a fantastic idea! I know zilch about anywhere other than Taksim and have been asked to go on holiday somewhere in Antalya. I'll ask you geezers first about the place - when I know! Need to get a map up to find these places!

Let me know the name of the place. I spent 4 years living down on the Aegean and Mediterranean coast.

Ovacik.... or is that now considered a suburb of Hisaronu?

Ovacik is just Hisaronu's lapdog and have melded together as one. Funny how it classes itself as a resort yet has no beach and his halfway up a mountain.

Kalkan was well on it's way to being a brit ghetto, when we were there in 2003; I imagine the influx of brits has got worse since then!

Kalkan is bearing up slightly better than those places further west. Still a a lot of brits but not quite reached the fish'n'chips and kiss me quick hats standard of Calis and Hisaronu yet.
Main reason is the transfer time from Dalaman I suspect. Saying that, the upper slopes above the town were like a large building site when I was there last week and the road from Fethiye etc is being seriously upgraded. A sign of things to come...

 Ghettos
Just had a friend of mine return from Kalkan after a 2 day trip. (she lives in Calis - there are a few nice people there) Her words were yes Kaşkan is a Brit place but you get more "up market" sorts living there not like our home town of Calis!
Re Ovacik - very popular with the Brits. the Turks call it English land! Nice scenery but bloody cold in the winter!!! Do you know that about 2 years ago the Brits there apparently wanted to change the street name names in ovacik to english ones, Queen Elizabeth Square, etc.... Some Turks I know who work in the area were jumping up and down at the thought! But we know this would never happen in Turkey!
By the way Altinkum - so popular is it with the Brits that the current Mayor has suggested that they may look to elect an English mayor in the future! The mind boggles.....
