 Bagels in Istanbul
I KNOW there are bagels in Istanbul...at least there were when I last visited...
but at that time, there was only one shop - in Istiniye. Can any of you tell me
where (exactly) Tribeca is now located...is there one or more on the Asian side
of the city? I heard that they had more than one shop in the city.
Is there a second bakery producing REAL bagels (Tribeca, despite it's NYCity
sounding name, does NOT make NY bagels!!)? Bagels need to be boiled
before baking...that's a REAL NY City bagel...totally different taste too.
You have no idea how good a toasted bagel is until you've tried one...with
or without cream cheese!!
thanks.

And you have no idea how long its been since you have had a good bagel as they simply have never ever existed in Istanbul. All they are here are glorified bread rolls. My personal solution at times is to bring a couple dozen back from H&H or University and feeze them along with a couple frozen tubs of Zabar's lox and chive spread.

I KNEW IT... I JUST KNEW IT!!!!
you're a double agent!!!!
how unmerciful can you get!!!?????
H&H? do they still exist? are we talking of the same H&H?...i don't think so...
H&H was a restaurant, known for the 7 layer chocolate whipped creme cake
and baked macaroni....'in the day' both cost less than a dollar....but then again..
my days are probably longer than yours...
Zabars...oh my ears and whiskers...i do miss their stuff. all i get from there
are kitchen utensils and aprons these days...everything i want from there that's
edible isn't transportable unless i have a special courier enroute...those days
are rare and far between.
and you're right about the bagels...but you have to realize, that for someone
who's been away from the home sod for so long, i can 'fake it'..
why i even buy pita bread here,
heat it up and salt it and IMAGINE i'm eating hot soft pretzels in my native
Philly town....i DO have the RIGHT KIND OF MUSTARD here however...it cost
a fortune to obtain, but then again, it's not an every day condiment.
there IS another Tribeca in Nesantasi, i'm certain.
isn't there a NY Deli there too??
i'll bet that prices are through the roof!
BIG SIGH.........

Dear AG, as I'm probably the EiT member that lives closest to Tribeca (Yeniköy) I can say that: The bagels in Tribeca only look like bagels but taste like plastic. No matter which of their 100 different types you try.
What you can do at Tribeca though is: Drink Efes, eat one of their free-style burgers (really acceptable) and look at handsome waiters that do not have a clue about what a waiter is supposed to be there for.

The H&H I am referring to is on 80th & B'way in NY, and has been pretty much the same corner bagel operation for as long as I can remember. The only significant change I can recall was perhaps in 1980 or so when they doubled the size of the kitchen.

There was a New York Bagel Factory restaurant on Bagdat Street in Feneryolu for years. It would suffice in a pinch and made some decent pancakes as well. Unfortunately, it has been "closed for renovations" for a couple of months now - never a good sign.
