Interesting site. I am perplexed, however, by the large number of sharp-dressed men in "English gentlemen" attire. I dont think I'll be sporting my Irish tweeds and Wellies just yet. Thank you for the reference.

 Amusing.

I'd be interested to know what the Turkish reaction to this has been so far...

You wouldn't think that one simple website could fill me with such rage, repugnance and hatred, but there we go.

Taking it seriously for a moment, here is my opinion:

I like the website design: it is clear and high-quality.

Also, the concept (in the sense that it wants to show individual diversity through fashion) is great. There was also an article in Time Out this month that hinted at the the diversity to be found in Istanbul (referring to Istanbul as indefinable). I believe that Istanbul is a city that has the energy and the cultural diversity to break down boundaries- and as the site acknowledeges in its interview with the Chilean performance artist "finally being able to express who you are without boundary" is a great artistic aim. Istanbul has the ability to foster this.

However, sadly the content of the site (and the Time Out article, indicidentally) is pretentious, bordering on the offensive. Istanbul street style it undeniably is, but the selections are mawkish (guy who wears saville row suits, half of the staff of 360, man with fangs) or vacuously patronising ("In bomber hat, high-collar sweater, silk blazer and blue apron Sefer Bey is ready for action"; "This stylish man was there during the founding years of the republic, lived through all the tumultuous eras in Turkish history, and can remember when Ataturk was forming a nation. Stunning to think of all the things those eyes have witnessed! Selam aleykum, Zeki Amca.").

The writing is poor ("A living doll, Buket is a familiar face around town"; "Things are moving fast in ’07, eh Em?") and unfortunately I suspect that the artistic aims of the site are unfortunately smudged by its financial aims (fashion is a large market). I think that we (and in particular foreigners) need to aspire to honestly represent Istanbul. And this involves listening to the city and its people and translating their voices clearly, not branding and packaging them with one eye on the money.

My god - I can't stop laughing! Shoot the translator - or love the translator. It's incredibly pompous English that is so tongue in cheek and serves as a piss take on the 'characters'...not perceived as real people of course although one or two are seriously cool people - what they doing on here?! Complete spoof! And others like you noted above are not!

Dano mate! Give us the thought behind this website!

It's one of the chief templates of Google's Blogger service, one that I also employ in my blog (which I aim to update sometime this century).

And you're right, whatever the original altruistic aims of the site may be (if any), they are fundamentally betrayed by the condescending fashionista attitude.

Yes, Dano - pray tells us; how is the weather up your own asshole?

1. Arikan the website is not really aimed at you.

2. I believe the site is in its infancy.

ALSF maybe should have mentioned this wehn posting the link.

3. It's not a money making venture. The goal was to have fun and give some aspiring artists and designers some exposure at the events.

4. It's also a hobby, so whilst I think some of the comments are helpful. I think some are harsh and pretty nasty - Arikan. Luckily the creator has thick skin.

5. I love the idea, I liked the comments and the variety of people photographed. It's individual, it's maybe subjective but certainly not elitist, and I like that! The fact a fish seller can be recognised for having some style is a good thing! It's all about Istanbul and the style of all its people, not just the people that perceive themselves to be stylish.

It's indeed in its infancy. Thanks for pointing that out Gilly. I applaud the creative team behing ISS for their efforts in delivering a different face of Istanbul that we otherwise may miss if we're actually walking its streets. I certainly can't do that from there but it is available to me with just a few clicks. It's fun and interesting to me so I will watch how it unfolds and develops.
