Post A place to live
So I just looked at this flat that is not in Cihangir but is not far from it (10 to 15 mins walking) - in Beyoglu and close to Tophane.

I have been told that it is: " 'in "kumbaraci yokusu" in the back street of russian embassy. It is the opposite side of asmalimescit street towards tophane'"

Does anyone know this area? Any suggestions or advice?

Cheers,

GG

That's not necessarily a bad thing; just depends on your tastes.

Not really that bad griffingrowl! It's more Galata/Tünel than Cihangir.
Now Cihangir is expat central!
I live in the next road actually. The Church is on the corner.
Your road is quiet considering it is a main road and not full of expats at all!
Get a good deal!!!

I know more expats in Galata than I do in Cihangir (but the latter is certainly ex-pat loaded)...I think for the most part Beyoglu, except for the stuff further down the Golden Horn like Tarlabasi, Kasimpasa, etc. is where most expats who didn't come here with some sort of work contract tend to settle.

I hate going through Kasimpasa. Always a hassle to roll up the windows and lock the doors when I drive through there.

...but it's not yet Cihangir and a nice place to live. Lack of bars. Two!! and those are really for the tourists who come to the tower. Out of season you don't see many foreigners...but that will change with all the renovations. However, his street is not like my street (meaning my building).

Yes thumbs up!!! It's not full of expats!
The area is great for your social life (just look at me!)...

I used to live up near Bebek, which is just too far away, and Asia is a no-no. Nisantasi area is boring and anywhere else is out of the question!

Nisantasi is boring?! uhh... Nice area, great shopping--esp. for hard-to-find food items, home of Turkey's best hospital, centrally located, nice properties, but can be expensive
Asian side=happier people, less Magandas
Bebek=nice views, gorgeous apartments, but expensive and far
Beyoglu=can have nice views depending on location, but can be a bit loud, area is dingy, only grocery store in Galata/Tünel is ghetto-salmonella fabulous Dia (at least that's all I've seen there) Gima in Cihangir is ok
