 recycling
Have recently been in the UK and have been influenced by the refuse collection (they put paper, glass, and plastic in separate bins for collection and recycling). I have started doing this at home and just wondered if anyone know offhand where I can take them. I live near Kadıköy/Uskudar

The idea of recycling must have finally hit the UK and you recently started doing it aswell. Breathtaking.
Excuse the sarcasm, especially since I can not answer your question. I´ve seen white/green class collection points at the coastal street on the European Side, don´t know about Kadiköy though. Many guys on the street collect paper.

Recycling has been popular in the UK for years. Many local authorities provide separate bins for various types of waste and there have been bottle, paper and plastic banks all over the place for at least 10-15 years.

Quite a bit seems to get recycled here anyway by those guys who go through rubbish. I try to help them by trying to separating my beer cans from ordinary rubbish. Same goes with old newspapers. As for plastic stuff, I have no idea.

Haha, yes I realise that recycling is not something new. I've just never done it here as I don't know where to take things. Actually one thing I noticed when I first came here is that Turks are great at reusing things. My mil never throws away glass jars or plastic containers and I love the way those big tins are used as plant pots. However my kitchen is too tiny to keep all our old yogurt pots etc. One thing that has really bothered me for a while is the amount of plastic bags that are wasted here, I take my shopping bag to the supermarket and have to really insist in other shops that I don't need a plastic bag (and I get funny looks). Those plastic bags can then be found littering up the sea, beaches and other would be beauty spots. So, rbngsjhnn please spare the sarcasm, just trying to do my bit, better late than never. BTW, as you can't answer my question I guess you're not recycling either, pot, kettle

the plastic bags drive me crazy and i really need to make more of an effort to take my own plastic bags back with me
i generally try and bring all my stuff home in fabric shopping bags
but...
there isnt any recycling depots up here in uskudar...
but i just separate my glass and plastic bottles for the gypsys that seem to pick them up most of the time... but sometimes they dont... and then the trash men throw those bags in with the rest
argh.
i just dont know what to do
WHY dont they recycle here?
dont have the facilities? dont care? makes me mental sometimes!!!

A friend of my brother-in-law bought a machine that turns plastic refuse into pellets that are then sold to companies making recycled stuff, we save all our bottles, bags etc and then take them to him. Problem is that he lives in Karasu, which quite far away.

If I remember correctly, there are paper, glass and plastic recycling bins in front of the Haldun Taner theatre at Kadikoy.. I take plastic down there, but I'm not sure if there are recycle bins for anything else.

The gypsies and others that go through your trah do a far better job of recycling than you'll ever do.

Actually - while we're on the subject, anyone else's complex have one of these new underground bins? I've only ever seen them around Acibadem.. The gypsies can't get anywhere near the rubbish anymore. We've been told to put rubbish in separate bags for recycling - but having watched them empty the bin I find it very difficult to believe that anything is actually recycled.

Another reason I felt inspired to do my bit for the environment, was that I've been visiting schools and I noticed that they had collection points for different types of rubbish. So there must be somewhere that recycles, where do the schools send their stuff? Or is it all just for show, like a lot of things in private schools
