but if it really is decent affordable housing in a nice area you're looking for and you haven't found it - you're just not looking in the right places
This sentence makes no sense. "Decent affordable" is an oxymoron when applied to Istanbul.
And that generalisation is moronic- and has only been adduced to back up your miserablist Istanbul is a pile of Sh*te theory.
Define decent and affordable in non-subjective terms.

I know I'm no longer renting - but my first rental flat out here was a nice place to live (ok so it was ground floor - it meant I had a garden and that I learnt to lock the windows at night) and affordable on our very limited budget. I don't see how you can say it can't be applied to Istanbul.

Quote: If you're heading to Taksim every day then Kadikoy would probably be a better idea than Uskudar
You've given a lot of helpful info, AllyTT, but I can't agree with you on the above point.
The stupid Kadıköy-Kabataş ferry doesn't run between 9:30-17:30, nor after 19:00 nor on weekends. (I'm bitter because I was hoping it would be more useful for me). It is also a 'trial run' so who knows if IDO will have the good sense to continue it or not. There are private motor boats (operated by Dentur Avrasya) running all day from Üsküdar-Beşiktas and Üsküdar-Kabataş. The journey is also shorter than from Kadıköy.
Kadıköy does have the advantage when it comes to the after midnight return from Taksim (a direct dolmuş). However, you can be dropped off in Baglarbaşı and pay a few YTL for a taxi into Üsküdar.
Also, mrmineo, I'm sure you'd get a much quicker answer from the various TÖMER's if you call instead of write them (this is based on personal experience).

Certainly. 500m Villa, Tarabya = $6,000 a month.

And how does that objectively illustrate that "Decent affordable" is an oxymoron when applied to Istanbul?

RSA: I've already been warned off you it's not smoke from ciggies that bothers me tho.. Why exactly have I been told to keep away from you? I'm now curious
As for the route to Taksim - I don't really know Uskudar vs. Kadikoy. I'm just going by what friends have told me. Uskudar and Kadikoy are both the same distance to my place - but as I'm travelling to Bakirkoy it's easy. The Denizotobusu from Kadikoy is ideal.
