Post Something like Araf
Is there any alternative to Araf in this city???

Something like Araf (relaxed, nice people THAT DANCE, world music, laid-back and all that) but that is just not again and again Araf?

Thanks for any ideas on this matter!

Cheers!

Which prompts me to ask...

Is there a thread somewhere that lists good dance venues, perhaps by type? With summer approaching -- well, kinda -- would be great to have a list of such places. Outdoor, rooftop, trance, house, etc.

The only place I can think of that plays world music is Eski Beirut but that is another student hole like Araf.
Monkban - You could read the mags like Istanbul Life and Time Out to see who is here and new club openings.
This is a good site http://www.daveti.com/
The clubs tend to reinvent themselves I find - new name, sometimes new decor, same place.

I used to go to Melek (not Yeni Melek) a lot. I hate Araf for some reason. Probably the low ceilings and lack of ventilation, but I love Melek. Small, but a good relaxed crowd (slightly more mature than Araf) and a mix of music. Wish I could remember how to direct you there. All I can tell you is that it's down a decent-sized street to the right of istiklal if you're heading from the taksim square, and there's a heavy metal bar next door. Maybe someone else can tell you more.

Melek: Imam Adnan Sokak, Taksim. Top of the road is Vakko.

eski beirut is fun.. can get a bit packed tho!
and yes.. araf.. but not araf hahaha.. an old and yet very real problem!

a friend and i were there a few weeks ago and had a blast except for the annoying fact that every man in the joint who spoke minimal yoda english had to come over and try to get us to grind up against his hairy chest or have some innane conversation about how much we yes, really really loved turkey
argh
(btw - yoda english for those of you have not experienced it yet is either a combo of nodding and repeating what you said or creating halfassed "you english speaky me likey want you be girlfriend mine" sort of thing - cute when they are short and green.. not so much when they make you feel green)

I was in Araf three nights ago, had a really interesting sort of Balkan fusion thing going with the music, and was treated to the sight of a Turkish man shouting "you sexy dancer" at some foreign women and a second later managed to accidentally knock half their drinks of their table. Very smooth moves.

Eski Beyrut: Opposite Jambaz on Imam Adnan Sokak (down from Melek).
Walk down Istiklal to Vakko, opposite is Imam Adnan, walk down to the end. Jambaz is on left, Eski Beyrut on right.
It's up some stairs. Look up and you'll see it.

ME: Merhaba. Nasılsınız?

HER: Teşekkürler.

ME: Sen çok güzelsiniz. Dans etelim.

HER: Farketmez. <Stubs cigarette out.>

LATER THAT EVENING...

ME: Çok sucuk, değil mi?

HER: <Blank stare.>

ME: Ahhh... Pardon... Çok sıcak... Haha... Amm... I mean... Ahhh... Bakın ... Ben yatakta palyaço değilim.

HER: <Blank stare.>

ME: Evime gidelim. Tamam mı?

HER: Tabii.

ME: <Thumbs up to bartender.>
