 The Canon on guitar
I guess this has been around for a while, but I just discovered it today. It's amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=215_Mei8IZg
Here's an article about it: http://screens.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/0 ... -know-him/

Great guitar work, although I do wonder at the quality of the sound ...... it seems a bit too good for a bedroom, although he could be playing through a computer and has improved things. I am also confused with two sections in the song where a volume pedal appears to be used, but his legs don't move at all.

It's heavily synthesised; there's some distortion and reverberation there that you cannot achieve without some post-production tweaking.

i think he really plays, the notes correspond to the gestures

hum...can you see his legs ? and concerning the sound, i think he directly plays through the computer (no amp)

no, you just need to use some regular fx pedals... and no special postproduction work is needed to obtain the artificial harmonics, just get enough distortion

I've played with regular fx pedals, and the sound was nothing like the one in the footage.
Of course, that might as easily mean that I suck ass at the guitar, but I am discounting that theory off-hand.

If you've ever played through some of the effects boxes produced by the likes of Roland you'll understand that the sound is easily feasible. I've seen Malmsteen do that kind of stuff live on various occasions. As for trying to emulate it I've got a greater chance of defaecating gold

But even with Roland pedals, there is no way of altering the volume to bring notes in softly, exactly in time with each note played, this must be done with a foot pedal or in post production.

i agree with Ch
and even without a box, you can directly plug the guitar in your soundcard, and use a software like guitar rig or amplitube
for the violoning effect, he can either use a volume pedal like you say, or an fx that automatically decreases the volume of (the begining of) each note. there's one in guitar rig, test it if you don't believe me !

I don't use effects ...... I play with a raw sound, often compared to a million nails being scratched across a blackboard.
