Hello there fellow expats..

So glad to have joined you.
I said to Starman the other day that i was going to write an intro, then got distracted by my 1yr old boy and never got to sit back infront of the computer...

A little about me - im married to a wonderful Turkish man (will be 5th yr inDec) we have a 1.5yr old boy. Currently living in Australia (my home) this is where we met. Hubby finished masters now so ready to go home. We will be living in Istanbul (Kadikoy area)
But will definately be making trips to the otherside to see what all the fuss is about (StarMan)
I have also come accross from mymerhaba where i have met some nice people (Emma where are you)
We were meant to be leaving for Turkey this month... but looks like it will be a few more weeks (Govt paperwork is a pain in the a**)
Im excited and very nervous about moving.. it will be an adventure  :? alot to learn.

Happ to hear any advice or tips on making the transition easier (except from tallpony please)

Talk to you later :D

StarMan,

yes i was there in 2001 only for 1month. Spent most of the time visiting his family. Did get to go down to Alanya and see a little of the coast. Ahh and topkapi palace (amazing!) and eat baked potato from one of those many caravans on the Bosporus - yummy.

All i know is woman have to look imaculate (coverstar glamour would do) ahhh and you must as a woman be fanaticl about cleaning (your life revolves around it, how clean your house is) as you never know when someone might drop in and run there fingers over the coffee table to check for dust.. from the reading i have done on mymerhaba it seems that everyone has a cleaner though????

Shopping, pedicures/manicures, blowdryes, body treatments, coffee, lunching zzzzzz all sounds good to me!

hosgeldiniz! bianca

guess you are right about this whole cleaning your house -thing. but what i don't get is that this only stretches as far as one's front door, take a step outside your apartment-building and you shouldn't be surprised if someone empties their tablecloth with breadcrumbs from their balcony, just above your head! or let alone the park and public areas, although the municipality provides bins everywhere i guess it is just easier to throw your garbage anywhere you want, only to find that you have to sit in your own litter the next time you visit the park. what is that all about?

Anyway, once again welcome and feel free to ask any questions you have here in the forums; i am sure everyone here tries to help out answering them as best as they can.

Hosbulduk Flying Dutchman :D

Thank you.

yeah i remember when i was there my in-law's were doing that (emptying table cloth over balcony) i was suprised. I guess thats what you do when you dont have a backyard??? or you could just put it in the sink (crumbs) or bin.. As for the parks i didnt get to see any.

Its very much about image there isnt it? whats on the outside. As long as your house is imaculat and your appearance is spot on with the latest styles etc and driving a nice car (never with the windows down as you might mess your blowdry). Dont get me wrong, there are so many great things about Turkish people and there country otherwise i would not be moving there. Just that i found alot of really shallow comments and ways about some people.
Please please dont anyone get offended! im not saying all the people. Maybe it has somthing to do with
the area i was in    :(

So they dont have people come and clean the public are's (council workers..)

What are the playgrounds like? nice? old ,new?

Well thats enough from me for now.. hope you all having a good weekend!

No, you can't drive with the windows down not because it will mess up your hairstyle; but because you will get a cold, lack of viruses notwithstanding! Also, do you know that you can also contract colds from drinking cold liquids and not wearing a type of undershirt associated with "ameleler" (rednecks?) (latter point only applies to men) Other amazing tips: it's okay to chain smoke and spend hours in a solarium, but don't use deodorant--it might give you cancer!

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone; as well as I know that not everyone in Turkey thinks this way. However, I do like fresh air when riding on a bus when the temperature is above 20 degrees C and not drinking hot liquids in un-airconditioned buildings in the summer.

Hi Bianca

Nice observations about social norms - I am often observed and am still getting used to it. Hair, clothes, weight, boyfriend's status etc. Luckily I'm an individual and I am trying to resist prepping myself continuously and speaking in a squeaky voice.

So, what's wrong with Tallpony then? You been fighting with him too?
This is a Tallpony-free site so no worries there.

Why do you want to leave Oz? :) Too many Brits??

well... i don't know... 'cos i am a bit past that age already; as you may have noticed i can read and write [although not very good] and already make use of computers and the Internet.

but next time i walk pass a playground i will ask the youngsters about their experiences and report back in this forum. perhaps one of our other members [a parent] is better suited to answer your question Re: playgrounds in Kadikoy! sorry i can't be of any more help here.
