Post From Washington D.C to Istanbul
Hello all! I'm moving to Istanbul in May and thought that this web site could be helpful. I'll be in Istanbul for three or four months at first, then I have to do some traveling for academics, and then I will be back more permanently. I've previously spent about a month in Turkey, and felt immediately like it was my home, so I'm very excited to get back!

Some people get that feeling - I didn't but strangely I'm still here with no end in sight

Welcome to EiT!

Welcome JessicaHu10.

Short for Jessica Hooten? What brings you to Istanbul? More detail please. Enjoy your time in Turkey. Bring an open mind, a sense of adventure, and your sense of humor, and the time spent in Turkey and on EiT will go smoother.

Welcome once again.

Nope, not short for any last name. I'm a student of cultural anthropology and my country of concentration is Turkey so that is a big reason why I am moving to Istanbul, to further my education. Also I fell in love with Turkey, especially Istanbul, and have wanted to come back very badly. I decided Istanbul because I have many friends there, it was one of my favorite places, and also because the grad school I'd like to go to and am planning on applying to is in Istanbul.

Welcome and good luck with the Turkish education system, I hope you keep the spirit :) Have you learnt any Turkish yet? Try to get into a programme with at least some foreigners unless you speak Turkish, that would be my advice. Good to come in May, one of the best months to be here...

I've learned some Turkish, and am in the process of learning more. I'm not very good, but I try and practice hard. I have a lot of Turkish friends who tell me that once I start living there I will pick up on it very quickly, so I am hoping that is the case.

Welocme to EIT Jessica. I spotted your question in the food section and will happily let other more experienced Turkophiles answer that. Charly?

I forgive Istanbul a lot just for not being DC.

What's your focus? In another life and years ago, I was a folklorist and my ex-husband was a cultural anthropologist. Culture abounds here. Welcome!

Wow, Verjen, we might have a lot to talk about! I've created my own interdisciplinary cultural anthropology major called cultural relations. I'm planning on writing my thesis on football and culture, and its impact on international relations.

Football, culture and IR - I am a political scientist so it sounds like an intriguing topic. Good luck with that!!!

Does the HU stand for Howard University? Just a wild guess...
