Here I am! (See, there ARE festive people in Ankara...)
Greetings all,
Gee, how do you introduce yourself to a huge, anonymous group of strangers and still look cool...well here goes nothin':
I've been living in Ankara for 2 years, and while I'll admit that Istanbul is the city synonomous with Turkey, I'm quite content in our quiet little capital. My father always said, "If you're bored, then you're boring," and there are too many amazing experiences to be had here to make excuses.
I'm a teacher, of which the only disadvantage is the transience of the people I connect with. This summer, I lost another wave of friends as most of them returned to their respective countries. Bummer. I'd heard about these internet forums and (sidelining my paranoia about potentially exposing myself to crazies and creeps) I decided to check it out and see what the online community is all about. So far so good, no crazies yet...

Hello Laura, do you like orange elephants? I have one. And a Casio calculator.
Stop shouting at me!
Welcome to EiT, Ward 3.

Welcome. I sense the cheery tone, maybe a desperate reaction to the chaotic anything goes city you are living in. Unfortunately there are plenty of crazies around, check out the special EiT events for those, with straightjacket's supplied (occasionally causing problems vis a vis beer drinking and cordial handshakes).

Thanks for the welcomes...actually Mr. Simpson I prefer white rabbits to orange elephants. Geordiedave, where can I learn about those special events?

Audrey Hepburn is not a bad start. Welcome Laura- nice quote.
There seem to be some nice people from Ankara on this forum: FD and OZ Kanka for a start, and Spine seems to be nice (although I have not met him so he could be a burly man in his forties wearing a polka dot dress and suspenders). Enjoy.

I am indeed nice. I know this for a fact because Kate G. told me so at university. I pursued her for months until one fateful evening at the bar she said, "Oh *Spine*, you're so nice!"
At that, all my dreams of romantic conquest shattered. Bereft and alone in my niceness, I took to wearing the polkadot dress.
I'm fairly easy to spot (geddit?) around Ankara.

Where I'm from (San Francisco), a polkadot dress and suspenders on a man is called "personal flair." I can dig it.

Well done- you've just made David Simpson feel "accepted" for the first time in his life.

Make your mind up boy, first Spine then me. Do I detect a fetish from the legal eagle?

Suspenders, stockings and a nice suit, whip conveniently attached to the underside of the conference table.

Laura, where are you working/living in Ankara? Many of us are in the occupied territories of GOP and Cankaya. We (or at least I) tend to booze around Tunali...

Careful now, you know that old saying, "Everyone hates lawyers, until they need one."
I teach in Kizilay and live in the GOP area...unless I haven't got water and then I'll be living at your house. I spend lots of time on Tunali, how come all the interesting expats have been so elusive to me?
Another question as a EiT newbie, why aren't the personal photo albums more popular? I'm having fun filling mine...is that 'uncool?'
