Post Irish in Istanbul
Hi guys,
A brief intro - I'm Irish and having been living in Istanbul on and off for about 5 yrs or so altogether. I live and work in the Sisli area, currently in tourism after a few years of teaching here. A friend has recently pointed out your wonderful site to me and I've also heard great things about the forum as well as parties! :) So I hope to be able to join both forum and parties and meet some of you soon :) Ok I hope that's enough of an intro to let me join the site!?!

Welcome Turquoise. Are you female? Why on and off? What else do you do in your life? What great things have you heard about the forum?

And of course, what is your shoe size, tolerance for alcohol, favourite cake, and other questions our temporary interrogator forgot to ask.

Welcome

Thanks guys, To answer some of the things Oz, Utabe & David asked - I've worked for quite a few years in Istanbul but also at home for a while (hence on and off) and returned here last year again for more!. I'm female, have great tolerance for alcohol (or I think I do!), Raki and mezes in Taksim is a favorite, what else? love walking, exploring new places and meeting friends for a few bevs!

Also I'd like to do more sports activities here but up to now haven't had a lot of time - any sports with a ball or a boat! if anyone organizes anything like this on a fun level (that doesn't require serious fitness  ) I'd be interested in joining so let me know!

Well this site seems a great place for a bit of banter and to swap advice/experiences so I hope to start using it more now...

Please don't feel you have to like Raki, most people actually don't but they feel they have to say they do.

A sport with boats, common here, is "chase the tanker". You wait on one of the bridges utill a tanker passes below, then jump and try to catch it before the next bridge.

One with balls is called "football", i've no idea how it's played but apparently some of the people from the forum meet at the weekends to do it. There's usually a laywer around for personal injury suits.

Hi everyone,

First Aids - Yes it was great to meet you and some of the other members at the dinner this week :) it's always nice to put a face to the names!!

Red Fire - great to hear of another Irish woman indeed! Yes I'm always on for supporting our fellow country men although I have to admit I'm not usually a serious rugby follower - Where do you plan to watch it in Istanbul on 21st??

Far From Home - I work nearer the Osmanbey side so not strictly Sisli but still very close! How do you find living in Sisli?

Teacher Chick - I appreciate your understanding with Raki - it has definitely taken me a few years to get used to the taste as well but I can see now how it really does compliement those mezes!

David - thanks for the sporting ideas... Think I'll have a rethink for now!

Turquoise, where in Ireland are you from?

I am from Belgium myself but lived in Ireland for three years before coming to turkey. I lived in Dublin for a year and in Belfast for two years. Also been to Galway, Dungannon and Derry quite often.

hi Gerrit, I'm from Dublin from a nice coastal part of the north side. You must find the size of Istanbul a shock (or pleasant surprise) after Ireland and Belgium! I still do!

One of my family members has just moved to Belgium for a year or so working in Brussels, so I'm getting the low down on everything Belgian!! I hope to go for a visit soon!

Red Fire - Yes definitely PM me to let me know nearer the time of the match! Would be on for it. I can receive PMs but not send any yet!!

Hi!
thanks for the reply. Would love to meet up with you sometime. Feel free to email me and we can meet up whether it be in Taksim or closer to my area. Either way does not bother me! Hope to hear from you.
