 Merhabalar
Hi,
I'm not new to Turkey but I'm kind of new to Istanbul as a resident. I'm here because I'm attending Bogazici University this year and I have a Turkish boyfriend (it sounds so cliche I know). I live in Besiktas and am teaching lindy hop AKA swing dance classes in September. Originally I'm from Portland, Oregon.
Nice to meet ya'all.

hi there
There's getting to be a Portland contingent in Istanbul. I met another couple from Hilsboro I think, working for Intel, at the Boat Party.
Welcome.

Welcome to the forum Mija! I am from Seattle, so apparently we have a bit of a NW contingent going on here.

Hi there and welcome.
I'm going to be in Istanbul from next week and will be living in Besiktas (from what I can work out that is but I'm not too sure exactly where).
Lindy hop sounds interesting maybe I'll pop along and take a look.
Hope to see you soon!

Delridge, I grew up in Issaquah. When it was still the country.

Mija.
Dance classes sound fun! Keep us posted. I am from Northwest Montana (Kalispell) so I think that makes me part of the NW contingent as well. I love both Portland and Seattle (then again, any city starts to look good after a long stint in MT)

Hey cequirk, yes, I vaguely remember a time when there was green space between downtown Seattle and Issaquah. Issaquah used to be a quaint little burg tucked into the hills.

 Hello!
Nice to meet fellow Portlander. I grew up in Portland but bought a house in Hillsboro about 5 years ago. Just moved to Istanbul about 2 months ago. And yes, I am 1/2 of the couple that the previous poster was speaking of.

Wow a Portland contingent? That would be amazing. Now how about a vegetarian contingent? Would anyone like to join me for a soy burger in taksim? or a tofu cooking contest? I found tofu at Carrefour one time.

Okay, I think it was carrefour. There's a street by burger king in Taksim and if you go up eventually it turns into a one way street. Keep going and there's a grocery store on the right hand side. Tofu is in the cheese section on the left hand side wall.
There is a street of vegetarian restaurants in Begoglu, it's tricky to find. If you take a right at Vakko coming from Taksim square, go down the street and take a right at the end where it says Tango Jean (a nice tango hall BTW). Go up that street and you will find some great places. Be careful about "mincemeat" on the menues because sometimes it means soy and sometimes real meat. And the restaurant advertising "Turkish and vegetarian food" doesn't really get the vegetarian concept.
Send me a message if you would like me to show you where it is.

Zencefil is on that street. Great vegetarian restaurant with a garden. Kurabiye Sk.
Can't think of the street you mean for tofu - only Çihangir Carrefour down Siraselviler Caddesi (German Hospital street).
