 New family in Adana
Hallo everyone. My husband, daughter, and I moved to Adana in November. I enjoy the culture, food, public transportation, history. We have met a few friends but I am still uncomfortable because there are not a lot of foreigners in our area, so we draw quite a bit of interest.
I would love to hear from other mothers and appreciate any advice.

Welcome serendipity!
So, what actually bought you to Adana? Work, husband? Are you planning to stay for long? If you can, check the section on other areas in Turkey on the forum as there are sure to be others in Adana.
Good luck to you and your family. I am sure you will find lots of helpful things on the forum.

Thanks for the welcome. We're here for my husband's job. I've lived all over, UK, Germany, Greece, US, but this is my husbands first time overseas. He's adjustig well but is very concerned about my and my daughters safety.

serendipity,
Welcome to EiT and Turkey. I'm sure things will improve with the arrival of the summer months. The best thing about the forum is the advice is free (and there's never a shortage). My advice to you would be sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. You won't find much on the forum regarding Adana. So do some exploring because southern Turkey is a beautiful place come summer. Food is great and the people are well as the people.
As far as "drawing alot of interest", is there something you're not telling us? Is your hair dyed all of the colors of the rainbow? Do you have an extra eyball planted in the midlle of your forehead? Maybe the attention you receive is only out of curiosity. Take it as a plus that you're not like everyone else and you have something to share.
Good luck and I hope to meet up wioth you and your family. Things are moving slower than expected, but I hope my relocation to the Mersin area will be a done deal by the summer. Currently watching it snow in Chicago.

If you don't mind my asking, is there a particular reason why your husband is very concerned for your and your daughters safety?[/quote]

 Assimilation
My husband is normally quite careful but more so with my daughter. She is (please forgive a mothers pride) 15, 5foot 6 inches and very pretty. We did have a rather uncomfortable incident when we were walking through the market in Old Adana. One of the vendors was quite rude and insistant, which surprized us really since most people are normally very friendly and respectful. On many occasions if we are waiting for a bus or otherwise just standing around we've had young people come up and ask if we need help. Then again it's pretty hard to blend in when my husband is 6foot 3 and sports a shaved head. The hubby is a true old fashioned southern boy and this being his first time living out of the US it will take a while for him to adjust I guess.

serendipity,
From one proud father sporting a shaved head with two beautiful girls; I don't balme you as parents for being protective of your daughter. However, that should not get in the way of making the most out of your time in Turkey. I'm sure the both of you are well aware of the fact that rude or inappropriate behavior exists everywhere. Don't let those few ignorant ones ruin what should an exellent adventure. I've lived in the south. (Memphis, Pensacola, Atlanta, and Baton Rouge) I've run into some of those good 'ol boys that think they can do and say anything they please too. They are everywhere. Whether the name is Billy Bob or Ahmed, try not to judge too quickly and make the most of your time.

You do know that the Adana is called "Texas" here. Wild wild west. Welcome to the forum and welcome to Turkey.

And thank you for the welcome. Heading down to the farmers market tomorrow morning. I"ve been told that the new produce comes in on Monday morning. I hope everybody that celebrates had a good Easter. My turkey turned out moist and delish. The bacon-wrapped sausage stuffed jalapenos were really popular, but the capper was the profiteroles served with hot chocolate. MMMMmm, I ate way too much!
