 On my way.. almost
Hello all!
I am soon to be teaching middle school in Istanbul (Uskudar) and this looks like a great forum for ideas and things to do. I am from Montana but I've been teaching in Latin America for the past three years (Mexico and Venezuela). I am trying to learn a bit of Turkish but would also like to keep up with my Spanish.. if there is anywhere to get that done I would be really happy to hear about it. Turkey will be a new corner of the world for me. I love travel, art and music and it looks like I will find plenty of all of this there!

Hola de Uskudar! Where will you be teaching? Any idea yet on where in Uskudar you'll be living? (I prefer near the ferry landing myself)
There is a Spanish speaking group of women here, CHICAS. I'll PM you their contact info.

Hi Erin,
Spain is often considered a good place to practice Spanish. Welcome to Turkey. Or, bienvenido.

I know, your picture and your name are familiar to me. The only thing I can think of is other US states, where we might have met, have been to and worked in some states in the 1990s, have you worked as a camp counselor at that time?

Welcome to the forum Erin. Difficult to see from the photo but I'm pretty sure we haven't met before. Enjoy Istanbul, you'll soon find it's unlike anywhere you've ever been before.

To reply to a few posts at once..
Sounds like there will be some opportunities to keep my Spanish from getting too rusty.. makes me happy I am trying hard to get a bit of Turkish down before I leave.. I am now ready to move to lesson three on my Turkish language cd... we'll see how I do.
Banana.. Is the big American school the Uskudar American Academy? Either way, I would love to meet up for a ladies night with people from the area. Keep me posted!
Utabe.. I've never worked at a camp (or been to one for that matter... maybe I was a bit deprived as a child). I'm not sure where we could have met.. it is a pretty small world though..
A few more questions, as the first one was answered so well.. Are there dancing (just for fun) and yoga (preferably hot yoga) opportunties in Uskudar? Also, how big of a deal (time commitment/ease) is it to cross to the European side of Istanbul? It is something Uskudarians do often?

From Uskudar it's a 10 minute ferry ride to the other side. Very commutable.

Hi Erin
Nice to see you found us! I was right about the "Canadians at your school" connection - which is really good news for you as they are great girls!
