Post Experiencing server problems
Has anyone been experiencing problems with the site over the last day or two or is it just me. Could be my connection at work being bollox.

It seems to be very slow, I'm always getting 'timing out' errors and 'page not displayed' errors.

Yes - all the time. It's been like that for a fortnight now.

Same here. Not so much this week, but the past couple of weeks it would give me some "could not connect to the data base" or server timeout error. Wasn't the usual bad-internet-connection error message.

we are actually in talks about this with our hosting provider but it looks we have grown out of our current hosting plan as we are busting our bandwidth on a more regular basis now. also we believe the problems to be with the amount of concurrent connections the (virtual) MySQL database server is able to cope with (hence the database connection error some of you may have seen).

since our 1-year contract is finishing up we are now considering to buy a larger capacity packet which will triple our bandwidth, gives us 1GB more space and we would move to a server with less websites. unfortunately we are now riding out our last week(s) of our contract before the new lease comes in effect.

please be patient, we are aware of the problem and will report back when we are on our new hosting plan.

I just love technical talk! :D Good we've got the party revenue for all these extra costs! The show must go on!

Err... yes. A sizeable chunk of the party revenue is about to be spent on upgrading our hosting arrangements all round.

The problem we have is that we have simply got too popular! We were blaming the hosting company for recent issues, when it turns out that there is a good chance it us who are crashing the database server, simply by having too many people trying to access it at the same time.

Ho hum... the joys of being popular I suppose.

No. We've made a concious decision to stay advertising free on the forum. Loads of reasons which I can't be arsed detailing here, but will quite happily tell you about over a beer

Ok folks, you should see a noticeable difference over the next 24-36hrs as we are now in the process of moving to a faster and more powerful server. A proportion of the job is outwith our control and we have been assured there will be minimal downtime during the transfer.

If there is any downtime, I'm sure it will be compensated by the fact that we shall not be breaking the database server any more causing the sporadic outages over the past 6-8wks.

Hopefully this will save Carlo and myself some time as well, as we have been to'ing and fro'ing with our hosts over these issues on a regular basis.

One of the benefits of the 10YTL charge for parties, so thanks for bearing with us folks.

I'd also like to say thanks to the few kind souls who have offered us server space AND bandwidth, it is appreciated but we really do need to stay on a commercial footing with a proper service agreement and contract.

ExpatinTurkey.com Moved To A New Server

one could say i have had some delays given JohnF's time-frame above. not entirely my fault as it didn't work as advertised, but doesn't it always with computers. however, the good news is that as of today we have moved to a new server! with more capacity all round i am hoping that the sporadic outages over the past 6-8 weeks are now a thing of the past.

i will be eager to see no more database connection errors or time-out occurring in the next couple of days. however i won't be able to monitor the site on a 24-hour basis. therefore i would like to ask you to reply in this thread if you experience any server problems of any kind in the next week. please detail the server/ browser error in your reply.

thank you all for your patience and i hope you'll continue to enjoy the fora.
