Agree!
I deleted the cookies but when I scroll down expatinturkey &MM url still exists!

I think you will find that these are held in your browsers "history" and have nothing to do with cookies. If you want rid of them:

Tools -> Internet Options

Click on the "Clear History" button.

To be frank, getting rid of the browsers history doesn't really affect anything, other than taking away the auto complete of typed URL's.

Okay, I've tried everything but my access is totally fcuked. The new post counter doesn't work. My login is never automatic and I keep getting logged out whilst browsing the forum. I can't see how it's anything to do with my computer as I haven't changed any settings in the last week. Also the fact that this happened to a number of people suggests that perhaps it is a forum problem. JF and FD can you please have a scratch of heads?

:oops: Web sites change, this one is no exception to that, but saved passwords and bookmarks remain making them invalid! for example people tend to bookmark direct URLs rather than adding the domain (homepage) to their Favorites/ Bookmarks. i've tried three different browsers, including IE, and cleared the cookies and find no problem with any of those browsers. then again i didn't have to clear any 'Saved login information for websites' as i *never* save any username/passwords combination as i consider it a security risk especially since i am on a lap-top.

we already have mate! i know the above is also true for JF and it is therefore particularly hard for us to diagnose a problem like this as we can't replicate it. besides i hardly (read never) use IE perhaps making my suggestions sound completely off the wall. but let's try anyway:

the problem you describe is two-fold:

1. the post counter doesn't work (this is a cookie-related problem);
2. your login is never automatic (this is related to IE not memorising your login credentials or incorrect credentials for our site).

ad 1.)
  • make sure you are logged off from the forum;
  • close Microsoft Internet Explorer;
  • from your desktop or start menu click 'My Computer' and navigate to the following folder:

      C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxxx\Cookies

        where xxxxxxx is your username for WindowsXP
  • now locate any file that has got the string 'expatinturkey' in its name and delete it or if you can afford to loose all your cookies select all files and delete all of them (is quicker)

ad 2.) please follow the steps in my previous post for Microsoft Internet Explorer:

http://forum.expatinturkey.com/viewtopi ... 3192#23192

Internet Explorer's AutoComplete does a nice job of filling in Web forms, but it doesn't let you edit or delete incorrect entries stored there unlike FireFox for example. If this problem about auto-login remains you need to PM me for some more unorthodox method of getting to the bottom of this one.

Important: when you have done the above make sure you visit our website by typing its URL in the address bar of your browser:

http://www.expatinturkey.com/

Don't use any (outdated) Favorites or Bookmarks to access our site! You can always add us to your Favorites later when all is back working as normal!

Hi!
After unchecking 'use AutoComplete for Web addresses' my problem solved!
Can it be the reason?
Thanks to FD.

John/FD I guess the problem must be with my computer but perhaps you can still suggest a solution. Basically it centres on the cookie file. If it is present then I'm not logged in automatically and post counter shows as zero. If I delete it before browsing then I'm still not logged in automatically (no prizes for guessing why) but the new post counter works. I've taken to clearing the cookie before every session but would like to figure a permanent solution. Any ideas?

I deleted files/cookies/took off Auto Complete...then the secret weapon - saved the site in Favourites again.......and it worked.
