It's worked out using the Effinofferski Algorithm, which takes into account many different factors. The more someone pisses us off, the greater their EA coefficient is. When you take into account post counts and then the inverse application of the EA coefficient you end up with a rank and stars.

Yes, pretty obvious. I should have thought about it myself. Very interesting. Will try this at work.
But then I remember that Dekolte pissed you of at one occasion, clearly more than JC did at the same incident. So may be you need to look at the formula, as it seems that at least in this instance there is a little problem with the application.

well, i have less stars than jc, but have been on eit longer. maybe the length of time active on eit.com adds star power? that or i'm just way cooler than jc...

Jonathan,
It has to do with the special ranks some people have. JC has the rank of sky light walker following his excellent capability to walk on glass sky lights whilst under the influence of beer and lahmacun. The special ranks have a set amount of stars which dont change automatically according to post count unlike the default rank.
