Too true.
And as in Rodriguez's film version of Frank Miller's Sin City, the composition and lighting of most of the scenes in the trailer (and the eventual film) are carbon copies of Miller's work in the original graphic novel, which is fcuking incredible, by the way.

The Guardian have done a nice A to Z guide to Holywood's take on Ancient Greece. For example:
Olympics
Huge in ancient Greece - in the films, boys are forever practising their gymnastics and javelin-throwing to win gold for Sparta, Athens or one of the smaller states. They were held once every four years, with soldiers given leave from fighting to compete. The athletes performed naked, which was great for TV ratings. The games did not cost 10bn drachmas to stage, nor lead to increases in council tax. Ancient Britons never used to win anything, so no change there.
War
The cornerstone of Greek life. How the Greeks managed to invent drama, philosophy, mathematics and medicine I can't imagine, because they seem to have spent their whole time laying siege to cities, conquering the known world, pursuing Persians, raping, pillaging, drinking and arguing with each other in Irish accents.
Work
Largely absent. The odd olive grove is tended, and there's some half-hearted fishing, but otherwise it's all fighting, sex and Dionysian debauchery.

the visuals at the end reminded me a bit of gladiator, and the old farts on the hill a bit like freakshow from Harold & Kumar go to white castle.
not that those elements in any way detract from the superb cinematography. loved the music, too.
crap. just spilled my tea all over keyboard!!!

300 has grossed nearly $100MM already since it opened on March 9th.
Violence is on the agenda this weekend at least when it comes to movie watching. I haven't even seen Apocalypto and here comes another one...I'd like to see it sometime soon. I'm just going to look at six-pack abs and ignore the blood bath as much as I can.
Even the History channel's renditon of the legend used the visual format of the film. One thing is evident in Leonidas' time - from the time they were born, they were being prepared to become ruthless killing machines. Perhaps it was the common vein that ironically 'unites' those civilizations. Their soldiers were their most prized assets. Back to 300, dysfunctional fraternity comes to mind in regard to the Spartan boys' lives during the course of their lives. From the moment they were born, their destinites were determined. Male babies born were inspected for strength or weakness. The weak ones are left alone in the wild to die. Intense, brutal training begins from an early age to their final rite of passage. To become a 'man' they have to murder a slave stealthily.

i imagine that may account for a good portion of their proceeds. between the girls and gays swooning over all the pecs and abs on display, it's bound to fare quite well in the box office. may be the only good bloodbath date movie around!

I would just like to say that I found this film to be the most boring fim I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. I at least expected there to be some sort of story attached to the violence but there wasn't. Just a bunch of (admittedly well-ab'ed) men running around (half the time in slow-mo) stabbing each other to death. I found the strange cinematography & effects annoying and the colour grading awful, like a pirated turkish dvd (maybe it was a pirated dvd projected). And Salon 2 at the AFM in Taksim was terrible. The seats are barely graded, so even though we sat halfway back, my neck got a cramp from tipping my head back. And the image was not focused properly.
OK, that's the end of my whinge. I'm sure most of you loved it.
