Agree with the 'skeletons in the closet concept'. Must also say that I was never into Buffy and Angel et al, so to me it was quite fresh and enjoyable to watch a girl kicking ass. But 'anti-Bush'??? More 'anti-establishment' surely?
It's not groundbreaking sci-fi and borrows heavily from other films of the genre, but so what?? It's a formula that works if done well.Groundbreaking films are few and far between by nature.
As a stand alone film, I found it enjoyable.

Yeah for someone coming into contact with whedonverse for the first time it a good stand alone movie.
There is no such a thing as pure originality anyways. It's just how you present the variations of it. The treatment Whedon displayed here was subpar.

I saw "Junebug" at the film festival this weekend: brilliant film and if Amy Adams does not get an Oscar then I don't know what they give those awards for anymore.
Waking Life: Wicked. Can't wait for "A Scanner Darkly": it's my second favourite Philip K Dick after "The Man in the High Castle".
Catwoman on Digiturk: can anything suck more ass? Apparently not.
Willard: balls.
I want to snark it up to the max, mixing bitchiness with bon mot's the only way I know how, but it is a particularly sordid Monday so the above will do for now.

Saw MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA Saturday night.
I'm guessing the book was MUCH better than the movie. Some nice production values, but no depth to the story or characters, melodramatic overacting, more like a made-for-tv-movie
disappointing!
Nevertheless, i love Zhang Ziyi, hence my new avatar
hope to go to HACIVAT KARAGÖZ NEDEN ÖLDÜRÜLDÜ tonight

I saw fcuk loads of films this weekend.
I am not the biggest fan or supporter of bootlegs but seeing as Capote and Brokeback Mountain were not going to be out here for a while, and the fact that I have to watch all Oscar nominees before the show (otherwise my head explodes), I resorted to watching screener copies of both films. They are both equally good though Brokeback is definitely the more accomplished film. Among the five best pic nominees, Munich was my favourite but if it was between Crash and Brokeback as many surmised, it should have been Brokeback. I cried at the end of Brokeback: very sad film indeed.
I also watched "The Squid and The Whale" which is just a wonderful little flick. It's amazing that the same guy who played second fiddle to Jim Carrey was so very believable as a "once brilliant but now just a has been" writer. You have not seen passive-aggressive behaviour in a film until you've seen his turn here. I also cried at the end when the kid was facing his worst fear (not really a spoiler).
Finally: Cache. I don't watch French films often and Cache was a timely reminder why. They suck ass.

 the weather man
I would say very boring story telling of an average modern family lifestle- ignorant of each other and always late to express feelings... the son in the movie is a good prospect for tomorrows movie stars.. he is very talented and good looking. and the wife.. why the hell do they put her in "bad woman" roles.?? I started to hate the look of her... grr..
one line in the movie is memorable to me though:
"you should have more than a dollar in your pocket, you are a grown up man."
" camel toe" -that one guys will never forget!
and I also have to add another quote-- (am I getting into this quote thing or what??!! )
'easy things don't happen to grown ups'
may everything be "as easy as sunday morning" for u everyone... have a nice day!

I went to see 'Hostel' tonite, a Quentin Tarrantino production. I shall some up articulately as is my style..........
First 25 minutes:- Complete jugfest!!!!! =D> =D> =D> (much to the chagrin of my female film buddy!! )
Final 1hr and 10 minutes:- Complete gorefest, blood city!!! I nearly hurled at the eyeball scene (I'll leave that to your imagination)
Tarantino strikes again.
p.s., I still feel sick..........

I hated "Hostel" and Tarantino has fcuk all to do with the film: it's Eli Roth and Tarantino's name is just on there as a publicity stunt. I don't understand this Eli Roth "phenomenon": he is the bore of gore.
I also saw "The Weather Man" and it is a fantastic film. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I also watched "The Forty-Year-Old Virgin" again this weekend. It is one of the best films of yesteryear; I love it so.

Re: The Weather Man
I found the tragedy of the whole thing very subtle and touching: in a way, it is the anti-American Dream. Cage's character does not value his work, or himself, and he is lost in an urban wilderness that seems to be offering so much for everyone around him. He can't protect his children and does not even know how to really connect with them; which is sensible enough as he does not know how to connect with his father either. Having taken the easy path, he has a career and makes a lot of money thanks to his glib schtick "forecasting" the weather, which is exactly why he feels depressed and downtrodden, why he garners the respect of noone, not even his immediate family. He is bathed in not pathos but cuts, instead, a bathetic figure. Like Kevin Bacon's character in "A Stir of Echoes", it is the mundane he never saw in himself that has grabbed him by the balls, infected his soul and left him with no purpose in life.
It's a beautiful character study, with some becoming humour and perfectly nuanced performances. It's far from depressing and far from desperate: in a film about a depressed and desperate man, the filmmakers have achieved to pinpoint to the masses the marvels in the mundane.
Pretentious? Moi?

Weather Man is holywood going european. The whole art for artists hoopla is rearing its ugly head again. I prefer messages for the masses. Not clouding the the theme of the movie by creating veiled innuendos. The trick is to make it as original as possible without making it into a unnecessarily Chinese cookie fortune.
