There was no message to this movie - messages in a movie is like pineapple on a pizza, people think it's a good thing but they are wrong.

The film tells a story, does it well. So what it's an "art film"? This sort of criticism is reversed elitism: "Sorry, Hollywood, you have to go back to catering for 12 year old bottom feeders; there is no place for you in telling a decent story niche which I would like to reserve to the Europeans, thank you very much."

I can go off on one but it would be pointless. After all, we all know that arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.

Post Syriana
Went to see Syriana yesterday. Good movie, I thought. Very thought-provoking. It was really interesting watching it, looking at it through a 'western' perspective, but aware that I was sitting in a cinema in a muslim country. I caught myself wondering a few times how the Turkish guy next to me was interpreting what was going on on-screen, and how that might differ from what I was reading into it. Well worth watching, I think, and very topical.

As an aside, the posters are up in AFM Akmerkez for Brokeback Mountain, so that should be coming out pretty soon.

I saw it yesterday too.

It's a very slow paced non formulaic film. I liked it. I would have enjoyed it lot more if I wasn't 3 feet away from the screen.

Gave me a migraine.

I saw on the news that they are planning to not allow children under the age of 18 to see 'Brokeback' in Turkey (all parts? some parts? I didn't catch it...) I never heard of a movie where this was enforced before in Turkey. I'm thinking the likes of 'Hostel' is a little more detrimental to kids than 'Brokeback' is.

What??? People being mutilated to death and soft pr0n is more detrimental to children than a love story?? Surely you jest??

İs there something scandalous in brokeback mountain? I havent seen it and have no idea what the film is about. It was oscar nominated and I generally stay clear of those films.

Saw the trailer last night. From what I can gather, it's just a regular love story between two guys that lasts over the years. Not at all graphic so I cant see what all the fuss is about. You can have transvestites galore all over the TV (pardon the pun) and a thriving gay scene in Istanbul and a fair few turkish singers are gay. But put it on the silver screen and suddenly everyone realises that some people are gay??!!?? Good lord, whatever next??

A side helping of double standards anyone??

There hasn't really been an uproar as such in Turkey: controversies have been abound the world over though and especially the States.

I have seen the film (there is a mini review somewhere on this thread I believe) and of all the films nominated for the Oscar, I would have been happiest with a "Brokeback" win. There is a very violent love making scene beween the cowboys near the beginning which is inexhorably and inherently crucial though it gets gentler as the film (and the years) rolls. I cried my eyes out. Beautiful, beautiful film.
