King Kong: You see, it wasn't beauty killed the beast at all in the Jackson version, which had all the makings of a classic but drowned in its own prosaic self-importance during the "talky" scenes. It was Carl Denham's greed; and I have to echo myself here(not like that, you perverts) but that last line was not earned. Also that analogy to "Heart of Darkness" and, in fact, the whole cabin boy subplot: Utterly Dreadful! Amazing in a movie of this calibre.
Casablanca is my favourite film of all time (every now and then it alternates with "The Godfather" or "Citizen Kane").
JC - The reason I loved Sky High was most probably because, in a year where "dark" was the operative trend in blockbusters, it dared to be fun and lighthearted. It loved its characters, understood its heroes perfectly, and, like a great sitcom, it revelled in its farcical predictability. Also, the evil chick was hot, hot, hot.

I agree Casablanca has to be one of the best films ever.
I see you have Chunk doing the truffle shuffle as your icon. Goonies was another great movie I grew up to.

Goonies is brilliant. There are quite a few films that I used to love as a kid which don't really stand up to the test of time but Goonies definitely does. And I love that Cindy Lauper tune; in fact, it is among the tunes I work out to every day. So is "Going the Distance" from the Rocky soundtrack. I have the musical taste of kings.

I love "Sierra Madre".

You gotta love the classics. One thing I really miss about the US is American Movie Classics AMC, and Turner Classic Movies TCM. Not only do you get to watch all kinds of awome classic films, but you learn cool little trivia about hte filming or the actors of the time.
Bogart has to be the best of the classic stars. I especially enjoy his movies with Lauren Bacall. Key Largo, To have and to have not, dark passage.

Humphrey Bogart is an interesting case; he was a fairly run of the mill actor when he first started in the movies and he actually transformed into a great movie star. The closest case in our times is Tom Hanks: sure, he was wonderful in "Big" but noone expected from him the range that he showed from early nineties onwards? (He did not deserve his win for Gump [no actor who plays retards or wackjobs should ever be given an Oscar] but he was robbed for the Green Mile.)
I like Jimmy Stewart from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Wonderful work.

What's TMC - the movie channel? Is that on Digiturk? And do you know where we could find a schedule for this movie marathon? Sounds great!!

It's Turner Classic Movies; at one point, it used to be on Turkish cable in TRT4's slot after midnight, but I believe it has since been discontinued.
Digiturk will be showing "Crash" soon, though; which is very cool.
Edit:
Behold the awesome Nacho Libre! http://www.aintitcool.com/Nacho_large_vid.html

Jarhead - very formulaic, from basic training to the compulsory conflict. Better done than some but not as good as others
Walk the Line - enjoyed this but it could have been improved by tighter editing, better sound and the annoying "For Award purposes.... only" words that kept scrolling across the screen; you'd have thought that the editor would have noticed this!

Saw "Walk the Line" last night and loved it! I really dislike country/twangy music but definitely enjoyed Joaquin Phoenix's version of Johnny Cash! Will be buying the soundtrack from amazon since it's 29 YTL here in Istanbul - ouch! Would highly recommend this movie!

I watched 'Memoirs of a Geshia' last night and I have to say that it was pretty good. Obviously the book was better but I would recommend going to see it.

Brightbear, how much of 'Memoirs Of A Geisha' was in Japanese? My Turkish is not advanced enough to read and comprehend subtitles quickly yet, or are there theaters that have subtitles in both Turkish & English?
