 Oscars
The nominations have just been announced:
Best Film
Babel (Rubbish)
The Departed (Rubbish)
Letters from Iwo Jima (Not seen it yet, and this is a surprise)
Little Miss Sunshine (Not seen it yet)
The Queen (Great)
Best Foreign Film
After The Wedding Days of Glory The Lives of Others Water Pan's Labyrinth
I couldn't get the others down but there were no real surprises, apart from the absence of Dreamgirls in the best film category.

"The Queen" or "Babel" will win Best Film
I hope Forest Witaker wins Best Actor, and Abigail Breslin for Best Supporting Actress in Little Miss Sunshine

I don't get this. Most of the films are from Mexican directors are they multinational productions including American firms?
I mean even Queen is all over the place. Is that an American film?
I do not see why the need to have a foreign film section when they have so many foreign contenders.

I hadn't heard Ryan Gosling or Jackie Earle Hailey's names come up even once when discussing potential Oscar contenders. Jackie Earle Hailey's turn in Little Children as a convicted child molester come home to live with mum is so disturbing, I believe he deserved some recognition for it.
I love me some Cate Blanchett, but surprised to see her pull in a nomination for the film she did - George Clooney called her the best actor (not actress) in the business after their work together in The Good German.
It is odd that Clint Eastwood managed to create a better film in Japanese than in English!
(By the way, Unforgiven is playing at 17:15 Tuesday, January 24, on ActionMax)
Nice to see Paul Greengrass get a nod for the unconventional United 93. It's too bad this is the year that Scorcese will win even though The Departed is nowhere near his best work.

burbaco, Ryan Gosling and Jackie Earle Hailey were both touted as "sleeper" nominations, even though there are no true sleeps nominations (or films) anymore. Besides, there are always a couple of absolutely hopeless nominees that are just thrown in there for good measure.
I used a short cut for "foreign film," DAI. The award is for the best film in a foreign language.
Sadie, "The Queen" will not win best picture. Mark my words, read my lips.

Boyfriend forever?
Big Filthy fcuk?
Bongos for Fannies?
But Pan's Labyrinth will win best film in a foreign language.
