Turkish Airlines out of Istanbul Ataturk is the only direct flight between Manchester / Liverpool / Leeds to Istanbul that i know of.
I believe that both Lufthansa and Swiss Air (from recollection) go via Frankfurt and Geneva i think through to Birmingham.

You'll generally find Alitalia to be the cheapest but Swiss to be the best of the non-direct carriers. The cost of flying direct with Turkish doesn't really come down much no matter how far in advance you book and is usually in the region of 200-220 of your British pounds.
Our friends/in-laws generally search on a site such as expedia or kayak as they usually have the best deals.
Depending on when you travel you may be able to find a spare seat on a charter flight during the summer months but these are usually pretty nasty affairs so I'd advise going scheduled if at all possible.

thanks for the tips - we need to go there in July and thought that if I book way in advance I might get something cheaper but it I saw what you mean with it not making much of a difference with THY ... its around 750YTL return even if you book now
