 monday 29th
This is IStanbul's independence day and there will be lots of celebrations.
Expect that some of the roads may be closed and try to find alternative transport especially besiktas area will be a mess I think.

Here in the US it's out Memorial Day weekend and Monday is also an official holiday so we expect the road situation to be super congested as well. Good luck to all those traveling here and there. Enjoy and be safe.

What did Istanbul get its independence from? Ankara?
Okay, I see from the Milliyet headline, it's the anniversary of the Ottomans deciding to finally finish the job and take the city.
One of my favorite sites in Istanbul is the Rumeli Hisari, which I call the "Fcuk You Fort". If I remember correctly, it was built by Fetih Sultan Mehmet, basically staking his claim to the Bosporus and signalling to Constantinople, "time's up guys, I'm coming to get you".

So that's why people were asking me yesterday whether I was working today!
My mate's says it's not an independence day but a conquest day - when the Ottomans got their hands on Istanbul.

oh yes of course. I meant the day ottoman conquered it. (29th may 1453-nothing to do with Trkish republic) was just a bit sleepy so couldnt be bothered with exact wording...

I find it interesting that this "conquest day" thing wasn't celebrated until relatively recently. (ie last few years)

I'm reading Orhan Pamuk's 'Memories of a City' at the moment and he makes an interestingly similar point in his discourse concerning 'the conquest of Istanbul' vs. 'the sacking of Constantinople.' Then again, some people in England are trying to reinvigorate St. George's Day at the moment.
