Post Palma de Mallorca
A friend suggested that I check out Mallorca which is right next to Ibiza in the Balearic Islands. He said I could stay in his family's home. He won't be there but his Dad will be around. He is checking the accommodation schedule since family members pop in and out apparently.

Has anybody been there in this forum and and can recommend must-see places? I hear the clubbing scene is not bad so at least there is someting to do after dinner. Please don't hesitate to let me know what you think are the best places to visit. I will only stay for a maximum of 3 nights, maybe even just 2. I will be going with a girl friend.

Gracias.

It is a paradise for the bucket and spade brigade. Try mixing Blackpool and Hackney with palm trees.

Starpackageman, you've obviously not beeen to the right places. Mallorca is beautiful. Go!

I can't remember the name of the place I went to when I was there 5 years ago, but a lot of the island is stunning, is also very histroric. I will do some research for you, and let you know.

Thanks Starman. I lived in England for nearly 3 years but never set foot in either place. I get what you mean though.

I went to this travel forum and I saw that one part of the island is indeed inhabited by the British and another part has many Germans but one is more local but touristy, Palma. I wonder if it's worth the sidetrip. I should just go back to Turkey and go to Cappoadocia and Ephesus then.

Wrong again Startraveller. Yes, parts of the island are exactly as you describe (Magaluf avoid like the plague) but also Mallorca has a surprisingly high percentage of extremely well heeled travellers too. Various hollywood stars own homes there (Micheal Douglas and Catherine Zeta certainly do or used to) and its not as if they like to mix with the hoy-palloy now is it? Also the best restaurant I've ever been to was in Mallorca albeit not in Palma.

Certainly Palma is a one of europes biggest centres for yachting and super-yachts so there's a definite scent of money in the air. We were only there one day but were suitably impressed by the picture postcard old town with its cathedral, cobbled streets and cafes. Friends who've spent extended periods in Palma tell me the clubbing is pretty wild too.

If I were you I'd certainly be taking up the offer!

Thank you all for the info! Where might that restaurant be Simon? Do you remember the name? My friends/would-be hosts are from South Africa actually. They only 'summer' there and their home is in an olive grove, so I was told. Sounds charming. I hope it has running water and not a deep well... I'll find out the location soon enough. My friend says the best way to get around is to rent a scooter and go around in it. I was on a scooter and took a bad spill in Turkbuku last summer. I have scars in my left knee and elbow to show for so I don't think I will be getting on another scooter anytime soon...

My girl friend can't come to Mallorca so she will fly back to Barcelona and then to France from Ibiza. Bummer. Anyway, still waiting for confirmation if the house/room will be available. The fast ferry leaves so late in Ibiza, at 9 pm arriving at 11:30 pm in Mallorca. Another bummer.

Thanks for all the replies anyway, this may be up in the air.

Post Do you speak Spanish too?
I don't know how plush the accommodation is, if it s available still or if they will allow monkeys. :D

But thanks sweetie, I will have a chaperone in Barcelona and Ibiza so I won't need one in Mallorca. Besides, I have to troll for my matador...

Actually, a friend might come by boat from Marbella to meet me but l'll think about it. :D

AlSF, hold your ground on this one. Don't need any EiT men (or monkeys) tagging along to Mallorca. Don't want them getting in the way of your matador search.
