Am I being a bit dim? (for a change no) What's the difference whether a flight is short or medium haul? They still have to land in fog don't they?
Are flights from Turkey ok because everyone here drives with their fog lights on all the time anyway, be it foggy, rainy or sunny?
The reason for the delays is that due to the fog they increase the separation between landing planes for safety (from 3 miles to 6 in some cases). as a result of this only half as many planes can land at the airport. Therefore some flights must be cancelled and BA have chosen to cancel domestic rather than long haul presumably for economic reasons and the fact that internally people can find alternatives to flight. So now you know.
However this information is of absolutely no use to the 20000 people stuck in Heathrow with no way of getting anywhere. these delays will no doubt cause more backlogs as the fog here isn't clearing. good luck if you are travelling here
