I have just finished watching the last episode of season 5 and I cant beive the[spoiler] tids got to Bauer at the end and now have to wait until January to see how he gets out of China.[/spoiler]

January 2007. Because of the extremely episodic nature of the show, Fox does an uninterrupted run of 24 episodes. Networks commission anywhere between 20 to 24 episodes per show per season in the US, and they usually have hiatuses and re-runs to fill the 39 weeks of TV season. Fox eschews this by starting the show later in the season, and thus affording it an uninterrupted run.
Incidentally, ABC is planning to overcome last year's re-run problems with Lost (it became so frustrating at one point that it inspired a website called IsLostARepeat.Com, where the entire content of the site was a "YES" or a "NO), by airing a mini-series of 6 episodes this autumn, and an uninterrupted run of 18 episodes from Febryuary onwards.
