Post Garanti Bank Commercial
I rarely watch tv these days (the Sopranos is off the air and West Wing is doing re-runs of
re-runs if they don't get bumped for Turkish political talk shows), but the other day, I happened
to catch a bit of the Garanti Bank commercial....you know which one i mean...the little Jack Russell
dog and the guy with no clothes.

can someone explain this to me...what was the point ?

AND, more importantly,

was Garanti Bank actually making a political (anti-Islamic) statement?

I mean, almost full frontal nudity? in a commercial?

i must have missed something...as i say, i didn't see the whole thing only the
part from the checkout-counter onwards.

thanks

Actually I thought the commercial was great....the point of the commercial is that the man, nude except for his special watch, uses this watch to pay for the doggie food.....it's a new product, a watch that functions as a credit card.....and no, they're not making an anti-Islamic statement, nudity is considered quite normal in Turkish cinema, for instance.....

It's called Bonus Trink.
Garanti Bank developed this with MasterCard, and they're (afaik) the only bank in the world that have it.

As Californiadreamin' pointed out; you can pay by swiping your watch by a sensor that you may have seen at burger king's etc.

The video

This advert has nothing political about it.
The only problem I have with this advert, is the chance of the song becoming popular again.

Really? not being a viewer of Turkish cinema, I wouldn't have known that. So it's perfectly okay
to have a naked man in a supermarket with a female cashier. I find that interesting.

a watch that's also a credit card! my goodness!! so even nudists have a way to carry their
credit cards now!! i was worried about!

for the record, i didn't think it wasn't good...i was just puzzled by the full frontal male
and the seated fully clothed female cashier. but i guess things have really changed in
the Big I since i left!!

seriously, thanks for the info. i learn new things every day on this list!!!

The cashier seemed to enjoy it.
Turkish cinema has always had nudity. Check out Turkish films for 40 years ago, and you'll either see a woman in a really tiny bikini, or topless.

okay..a question...

would this commercial have worked if the central characters' gender was
switched? would it have been fine for a nude woman to approach a male
checker in a supermarket?

just curious?

i see another agenda here...but then again, i like reading between the lines.

There is no "between the lines."
It could've been a woman, but then the male cashier probably jumped her bones before she even had the chance to swipe her watch.

Actually, yes. A woman could've been used. If the dog didn't bite her bra off.
She could've been completely naked if the advert was supposed to air in, for exmaple; sweden.

ah..that doesn't count. 40 years ago, Turkey and especially Istanbul was a very
very different place than it is today. nary a head covering in sight - among females
under a certain age. it was a much more cosmopolitan place. i recall telling a
friend about Istanbul after my return, that if i had been brought there blindfolded,
without seeing signs of the language, i wouldn't have known which European city i
was in. i don't know if the same applies today. maybe..i haven't been to istanbul
since 2002.

1. There is/was no nudity. Did you see a banger and two eggs? Thought not.

2. Every other ad on Turish TV for the last 20 years has been full of scantily clad women, women without tops, covering their business, etc.

hmmm....'banger and two eggs'...lovely.. bangers...aren't they the party favor that have
a string you pull and it goes BANG? hmmm... fortunately, i've had enough friends from
UK to know what you are talking about TP...you assumed correctly.

so, can i assume that a covered woman offers no air of mystery or causes not even an
inkling of curiosity on your part...on the part of ANY normal, healthy, sexually-active
male?

if you saw a pair of gorgeous eyes looking out from under a black, flowing covering,
you won't let your mind wander into forbidden zones?

hmmmm...very interesting...

You see, you're trying to force people in to thinking that this advert is political.
Don't, because it's not.

Simply put, the meaning of this advert is:
Even, if for the weirdest reason, you loose everything -including your wallet- you still have your trink watch, so you can pay in those extreme (and not so extreme) situations.

It's an advert, not a Beatles song.

How about that ad with the chick prancing around hiding her decency behind a newspaper? Just looks cheap and stupid to me. Like the shower ads in the UK from years ago.
