 Homosexual characters on Turkish series/sitcoms
Have you all also noticed 3 things regarding the portrayal of homosexual characters on Turkish series/sitcoms ?
1. Actually, it is more of a 'non-portrayal' of them because only very very few of them have got gay characters in them.
2. Among the ones that do have homosexual characters, it is almost always the case that those characters are extremely effeminate gay men who seem to have been placed into the series/sitcoms as 'people to make fun of' and these characters are usually either hairdressers or fashion designers.
You can never see, say, a local gay businessman who is not effeminate at all.
Also, related to the second point, if you watch local TV, you get the idea as if bisexuality is non-existant here. It is well known that bisexuality (especially among men) is common in Turkey.
3. One can never see intimate kissing (even a very brief one) of two gay men or of two gay women on a local TV series/sitcom.
Such frickin' hypocricy and stereotyping really annoy me big time.
Cheers,
Cem
