I posted the below on a more geeky forum I frequent; I thought I share my words of wisdom with you mere mortals, too.
I was underwhelmed by the finale. Maybe it's because they hyped it as the bestest cliffhanger ever. Really? Not the fcuking version I saw. As the first season ended, the raft had been destroyed, Walt kidnapped and Sawyer shot. Not to mention that the Others were coming and that the Lostaways had finally managed to open the hatch to reveal a huge chasm, something many (and by many, I mean me) weren't expecting. That was a cliffhanger. And let's not forget the awesome stand alone episode that was the first part of Exodus (I'm a sucker for montages and I loved the way they all said goodbye to the raftaways, as well as that little chat Sawyer had with Jack regarding the latter's daddy). Great stuff.
I thought "Live Together, Die Alone" was abysmal compared to the Season 1 finale. There was not one scene that equalled (or even came close) to the sheer intensity and inspired, brilliant mise-en-scene of the scene where the Others took Walt. Nothing. Instead, there was a plethora of disjointed scenes that act like mysteries, but are completely inconsequential (and not at all interesting). Jack, Kate and Sawyer have been kidnapped. Oh no, the suspense! They're going to get back. Even if they don't, it will be after such a protracted arc that I will not really care whicever one gets offed or gets "Other'ed" like Michael.
We are also left wondering whether or not John, Eko and Desmond are dead. Well, no. They're not. It's as simple as that. Having gone through, in the past year alone, three regular characters (not to mention Walt and Michael who, I assume, are also out, mainly due to Malcolm David Kelley's having spurted to Goliath-size in the past year), the producers are not going to kill two of the more important Lostaways. Also, they're not going to introduce Desmond's love interest to the show only to kill off Desmond. I'm sure the producers will keep killing off characters regularly, just not these three, at least not yet. (aside: What a great way to maintain a large cast: Introduce new secondary characters, see if they work well with the cast and the audience. If they do, keep them on and kill off a previous regular to make way for the former in the budget. If they don't, top them off unceremoniously, announce that it had been the plan all along, and audition for new secondary cast)
Which leads me to that particular plot point. Like the Death Star following the Millennium Falcon to the Rebel Base in order to destroy it, this, too, is a huge risk. The introduction of the outside world takes away one of the show's cardinal foundations. If it works, it can be fresh and inject new life. If not, then I doubt the show will see its fifth season.
God, I suck.

The show is still a hit, but it has lost viewers in the past year. Having said that, if it remains a cash cow that can sustain a large enough audience(like E.R.), then ABC will keep it on and let it die a slow, painful, drawn-out death(like E.R).
I still can't wait for September, mind you. I can't bitch, if I don't watch.
