Pedantic point -one from the top drawer here Burbaco- you have spelt "Smallville" wrong in the title to this section of the forum.

It could have been worse. You could have called "desperate" housewives, "disparate".

Or "TV Soups," instead of "TV Soaps." (Glad they made that distinction, by the way; because, otherwise I would be all over this section with my incessant ramblings on Dove [the soap, not the bird - gotta make the distinction])

yes this could be a good thread about pedantry. How do people feel about it?

*on the one hand, it is good to be precise about language in order to ensure clear communication;
*on the other, pedantry sometimes loses the big picture.

"Smalville" is perhaps a perfect representation of this. Another is where Burbaco, Ali A (the original) and I got into a very heated argument over the use of a Turkish symbol on a letter.

ps I am sure that Burbaco did not make such a gross error. I was actually being helpful and pointing out a spelling mistake to the admins.

pps we can also talk about Smallville, which- despite Kelly Brock- I agree is uninteresting (rather like the recent Superman film). Get some new ideas America.

Smallville is just a homo-erotic, teen friendly, angst-ridden re-invention of the Superman mythos. It's not a great show, by any means, but it does have occasional flashes of brilliance.

Yes, Superman Returns sucked ass.

First of all, am I blind? I don't see 'smalville' on any title in any topic except for this one. ??

Secondly, JC, I hate re-hashing that ugly incident. However (of course there is a 'however') the word in question was not just a missing Turkish symbol but a misspelling that resulted in a word turning up nothing in google. I didn't bring it to your attention to belittle you (as you recall I first PM'ed you) - I thought there would be readers interested in trekking the Kaçkar Mountains (as I myself am) who might want to look for more information on the internet.

i.e. http://www.kackarmountains.com/

I might be biased but here's my take on the question you posed, jc. Calling unnecessary attention to a trivial mistake is pedantic and doesn't serve the forum well. If the mistake in question is not trivial, then I don't see a problem bringing it up if the correct information could be of use to someone on the forum (i.e. jyrays posting that çizme means 'rubber boot' was incorrect and could be detrimental to Turkish language learners).

Sometimes these trivial mistakes do lead to very humorous comments (pubic vs. public). I'm all for that.

:lol: Gosh are we still being pain-in-the-arse pedantic on here?
PS Smallville is crap.
